Snowboarding on glaciers in the middle of summer, hiking endless Alpine ridge-lines thru wildflowers, getting lost in ancient cities, biking along rivers, sipping on tasty beers, enjoying local fare, and meeting up with friends…. This was Austria for me last summer.

I had been working as a guide for an Active Travel Company called Backroads for a few months in Europe, and finally found a bit of time to explore on my own. I travelled through Salzburg, Vienna, Innsbruck, Melk, Dürnstein, Füschl am See, and Dachstein.

Some friends with Austrian roots in San Diego, California, got me in contact with some of their family in Innsbruck. Arno, my close friend’s cousin (Angelo), met up with me for a day hike just outside of Innsbruck. He took me up to some peaks near the city with some stunning views, and some of the cleanest air I have ever smelled. Thanks for the hospitality Arno!

I look forward to going back and exploring more of the Austrian Alps, and improving my oh-so-bad Deutsch.
