Carnival had always been on my bucket list, so when a friend and I had a opportunity to go we did not hesitate. We only had two weeks of time allocated to spend in Brazil, so we decided to stay with our friend Fabio on the island of Florianopolis, or ‘Floripa’ as the locals call it. Carnival in Floripa is not the largest in Brazil, but with 1.5 million people partying in the streets it felt big enough. Plus, we got to surf and hike when we wanted to escape the insanity.

DO: If you are planning on going reserve accommodation far in advance. Also, spend time trying the local BBQ’s and different flavors of caipirinha. Personal favorite was the pineapple caipirinha.

DON’T: Wear sandals to the street festivals, as there is a lot of broken glass on the ground. I learned about this first hand, or should I say ‘first foot.’

TIPS: Be sure to check out Ingleses Beach on the northern tip of the island for surfing and trekking.
