When you get a free hotel and ‘almost’ free lift passes it is hard to pass up a trip to Lake Tahoe. The only problem was that I had to get myself there from San Diego. The easiest way would have been to fly, but tickets were expensive, so I decided to drive my Toyota truck. A 10 hour drive isn’t that bad, but when you do it by yourself it is pretty boring.  Thanks to a lot of Redbull and sunflower seeds I survived the drive, which was snowy, icy, windy, and at night.

DO: Do take the South Lake Tahoe Express from Reno. The shuttle is cheap and means you can skip a lot of the dangerous mountain driving.

CHECKOUT: Heavenly Mountain is a great resort, but can be very exposed to wind. We got a few really good powder days, but by the end of the week most of the fresh snow was gone. There are a lot of resorts in the Lake Tahoe area, so if the wind does pick-up it may be best to avoid Heavenly and head elsewhere.
